about

For me hip-hop was one of those teenage discoveries after growing up listening to classic soul, jazz, and funk. Except it was a genre that was hard to fathom where all of the sounds and great music came from. The groove, the rhythm, the breaks, the beats. It was, and still is, magic.

Starting to mess around with music in the late ‘90s, the creation of beats and the use of loops was a go to. A way to learn the form. And from there creating little slices of chilled downtempo with roots in hip-hop, house, funk, and jazz. The Beat Tapes began the same way. Messing around with beats and grooves and finding various moods, creating something from a mix of old, new, and found.

Tapping into youth and a love of the sound, these small exercises grew into a potential EP. But it wasn’t long before a few dozen projects and tracks began to tell a different story. As the latest Kbit album this might be a detour, but one that is definitely in line with the sensibilities that have informed my production over the past few years.

Warm hip hop, funk, jazz, house, and lofi ambience presented in a way that’s simple and emotive. At least that’s the idea. If you’re in the mood for some chill, then this might be some welcome company.
